What happens in the first briefing

The first talk is mostly about limits, not taste. A designer needs your floor plans, the handover spec, and a clear list of what cannot move. Plumbing risers. Walls that hold the roof up. The AC plant. On Saadiyat Island and Al Raha Beach that spec fixes more than owners expect. Learn the limits early and you save a concept that would be drawn twice.

You will also be asked how the home gets used. How many people eat at the table on a normal night. Whether guests are received apart from family. Where shoes come off. Vague answers make vague drawings, and vague drawings cost money later, usually at the joinery stage.

Bring to a first briefing:

• The handover spec and any drawings the developer has approved.
• Floor plans with sizes on them, or a measured survey if none exist.
• A budget range you are willing to say out loud.
• Photos of rooms you like, and more usefully, rooms you hate.
• Any date that cannot move, such as a lease ending or family arriving.

Who is actually working on your home?

Ask for a name. In a small studio the person who takes the brief is the person who draws it. In a larger one, a principal wins the job and a junior does the work, which can be fine, but you should know before you sign. Ask who attends site. Ask who answers when that person is on leave.

Response time matters more than most owners realise. A designer who replies in two days is fine at concept stage. During a build, when a tiler is standing in a room waiting on a setout, two days is a week of lost programme.

How many rounds of revisions should you expect?

Two is normal for a concept. Sometimes three. The first set shows the direction: layout, materials, joinery. The second answers your comments. If a project is still redrawing the concept at round five, either the brief was never settled or someone who missed the first meeting has started giving notes.

One habit helps more than any other. Name a single decision maker. Where a couple both hold strong views, they need to agree before comments go back, not inside the drawing. Put every comment in one document. Three chat apps and a voice note will cost you a week.

What does an interior designer in Abu Dhabi cost?

Ask five studios and you get five answers. That is why interior designer Abu Dhabi price gets searched so often and answered so rarely. The design fee is not what moves your total anyway. The furniture and finish budget is, and it swings hugely between a rental refresh and a family home.

The line to read closely is the one about your own time. Most fee disputes on homes start with a late change of mind, not with the original scope. So agree the point at which each choice locks, and what it costs to reopen one. A kitchen layout changed at drawing stage is a phone call. The same change once joinery is in production is a bill.

Who do you call when something on site is wrong?

Ask this before you sign. On most Abu Dhabi jobs the designer is not the builder. The contractor holds the programme and the trades. The designer holds the intent and the drawings. When something gets built wrong, the answer turns on which document was right and who was meant to check it.

Name one person on the design side to review shop drawings and site photos, and one person on the contractor side who may raise queries. Everything else goes through those two. Where the designer is not on site daily, dated photos and a weekly call catch errors while they are still cheap.

Island and waterfront homes on Saadiyat, Al Raha and Al Bateen

Sea facing rooms take a low winter sun and a lot of bounced light off water. That changes how colours read. A white that looks calm in a showroom can look bleached in a Saadiyat living room by four in the afternoon. Salt air is hard on raw brass, bare timber and cheap door hardware. So a waterfront home needs a different material list from a villa inland.

Masdar City flats have the opposite problem. The footprint is tight, so storage has to be drawn rather than bought. Either way, test samples in the real room before anything is ordered.
